Camping is not just a cheap option

Camping has not just become cool because it is cheap, as many luxury camping holidays are offered, according to an expert.

The Cool Camping guide book reveals luxury camping getaways can be expensive but offer an alternative break for many people.

Jonathan Knight, editor of the guide book series, said: "I don't think the reason it's becoming popular is because it's a cheap holiday. You can spend a lot of money on these luxury boutique campsites."

He said places called "feather down farms" are in operation in the UK, which allow for comfy, luxury camping.

They offer "canvas homes almost", according to Mr Knight, and can cost up to £600 a week.

However, the expert does say the large interest in camping at the moment is due to it being a "credit crunch budget option" for a holiday.

Canvas Holidays recently revealed the enthusiasm for camping, saying it had seen a ten to twenty per cent rise in bookings in the six weeks to June 11th.
