Good news for caravan owners, as new statistics have shown that thefts of the vehicles have dropped by 70 per cent.

According to Pink.co.uk, the drop has occurred since 2000 with industry bodies having joined with the Home Office to reduce the crime levels.

Alan Bisho, chairman of the Leisure Sector Crime Reduction Action Team, said: "Today we are enjoying the lowest ever recorded theft figures for caravans."

He added that in the year 2000 over 5,000 caravans were being stolen every year, but that figure is now just 1,600.

"This achievement is testament to the hard work of the industry as a whole," Mr Bishop added.

He stated that it was "important" to build on the success and avoid the multi-million pound losses seen in the 90s.

Towergatebakers.co.uk said that caravan crime reached "epic levels" in the 1990s, with massive rises being seen in the vehicle's insurance.

It adds that many people chose not to replace their caravan after it was stolen, leading to a reduced number of owners across the country.
