The culture, countryside and sport make Britain an idea place to holiday this summer, according to an industry expert.

VisitBritain has revealed that the UK having "some of the best exhibitions in the world" will lead more people to holiday at home this year.

Elliot Frisby, a spokesperson for the tourist board, said an "unrivalled calendar" of sporting and social events, like Ladies Day at Ascot and Glastonbury attracted people to the area.

"Britain attracts all ages and demographics. Our habit of taking a number of holidays spread through the year means that at least one will be a short break in Britain," he said.

Mr Frisby added that the countryside and coastline is another attraction for people holidaying in the UK, with areas like the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands being sought after.

Caravan Club figures show that caravanning is now the most popular paid for holiday in the UK.
