Police around the UK are warning caravan owners ahead of the summer season to be vigilant with their vehicle's security.

Doncaster police have warned that all vehicles should have the 17 digit vehicle identification number etched on the vehicle chassis and the windows of the caravan.

The Doncaster Police Crime Reduction Unit said the nation Caravan Council recognised numbers should be put on the windows if they are not already there.

It also advises a reliable alarm is fitted and windows or roof lights are closed when leaving the caravan or motorhome.

A crime reduction officer for Forfar police told the Kirrie Muir Herald: "Owners should check their security measures to ensure they are adequate. Locking the caravan coupling head into a cover using a good quality hitchlock and fitting locking wheel nuts can be good deterrent."

Both forces advise moving any valuables from sight, especially when the caravan is not in use.
